Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, rises against all odds from galley slave to mayor. while being pursued by the fanatical police inspector, Javert, who dedicates his life to recapturing Valjean. This vivid depiction of the appalling poverty and social strife of 19th century France does justice to the genius of the original Victor Hugo novel.
